I would have been greatly amused by an alternate to ‘thunk’ – unless that is a VERY hard mattress, something more like ‘boing’ and Mr. Browncoat getting the flat end of the axe in the face, heroine exit stage right.

Well, this is set in a time before the invention of spring mattresses, so it’s most likely filled with some mix of wool, straw or feathers.
