Toast in the shell
So, last night I was typing away on my computer. My computer had been up for a few days at that point, and Windows update had started flashing at me, so I thought to myself ‘this would be a good time to reboot before I get started on the comics’. During the shutdown process, the fan came on harder than I had ever heard it before. And then when I restarted, nothing. Not a flicker on my monitor, not even that BIOS text that scrolls by. Extra fan though. And dust. It was like a blizzard in here.
So anyhow, I got my broken tablet PC out of storage and got it working again. I was thinking of hooking my scanner up to it, and then realized that the script was on my main PC. So I did this instead.
Back to the main story next week. Tech support says I need a new motherboard. Thta should be a fun way to spend a Wednesday evening.

Man, a dust blizzard! It’s still a bummer, but I’d pay to see that happen. 😛

DULL? I know the feeling. Personally, I would have put “DOH!” as the faux brand, ’cause mobo failures are often rather spectacular with that particular make of PC.
I always have a hard copy of documents on your computer. You never know when things like this could happen.

Thankfully I’ve only ever had one motherboard go completely out on me, although I’m not sure why my laptop’s hasn’t yet, it has some serious problems.
First time for me. There was an issue with the mother board a couple of years ago, but it went away when I reinstalled Windows, so I thought maybe it wasn’t the hardware after all.
Anyhow, the order is now placed and I have an estimated arrival date of Sept 28. I’m hoping it doesn’t take nearly that long. You my be seeing more of the gremlin.
Hopefully you backed up all that was on the drive somehow? OEM’s are notorious for formatting hard drives as SOP for warranty repairs.
Depends, does Mark know enough about computers to do his own repairs? If so then it becomes a moot point (or at the very least he could just take the HDD out and not let them have it so that it can’t get re-formatted, so long as the new motherboard is compatible with the same make and model of CPU the old install should run just fine).
